The One-Person Spa
Saturday May 3, 2008
When it comes down to it, your visit to the spa is only as good as the treatment. The steam room and beautiful surroundings can add to it, but if your massage therapist is exhausted by working two shifts, then you might not be getting what you pay for. That's one reason I like the trend to one-person spas -- master therapists who have decided they want to work on their own. Two good examples of this is A Spa For You, owned by Thea Draaimsa in Sedona, Arizona and One Body Spa, owned by Diane and Michael Ryan in Accord, New York. Both are small but beautiful spas where the services are top quality, the prices are lower than resort spas, and you can be sure the therapist aren't burned out when they work on you. That's because they set their own schedule, and they rely on repeat customers, not someone passing through.

As an esthetician that can relate as a one person operation. I feel exactly that. I take off when I want. Therefore I am happier, rested and do not have to please anyone other than my clients. Yes, my prices are less because my over head and babysitting fees are down. (Prior big biz owner gone solo!)
Just recently I changed my spa to a solo person and was so pleased with the difference. At the bigger spa spots you can feel the hum of the schedule closing in on you. Or maybe its the stress from the staff dealing with time crunches:-)
I work one on one now, in a more private enviorment and my clients love it & so do I.

I spent an perfect and incredible morning with Thea at A Spa For You in Sedona, AZ in October. When my husband and I travel, he often climbs and hikes while I enjoy a day at a spa. I have had many pleasant experiences over the years, but my time with Thea was truly the best spa experience I have ever had. We hope to meet friends in Sedona next October–while the guys climb, we girls will spend time at A Spa For You. The Japanese facial massage and the “Sedona Experience” were remarkable in every way. The spa atmosphere was welcoming, warm, and peaceful. As for Thea, she is professional, talented and knowledgeable. It was a joy to meet her. I wish I did not live so far away! If you are ever in Sedona, do yourself a favor and make an appointment with Thea. You will have a lovely and memorable experience! Karen
