Spas and The Staycation

Monday July 6, 2009

Glen Ivy PoolMy Los Angeles correspondent just went to Glen Ivy Hot Springs, a 12-acre paradise where you can while away the day in therapeutic hot springs and mud baths for less than $50. "It's the perfect place for a staycation," she reported back.

That got me thinking how well spas fit into the staycation, one of the big trends of this summer. Instead of spending money on airfare, hotels, and every meal out, people on staycation are doing fun, relaxing things near home, including trips to the spa. The spa staycation works whether you're by yourself, with a friend, or going as a couple. (If you have kids, you generally need to find a sitter.)

Here are some of my spa staycation suggestions. If you're going to a local day spa, create a whole experience around it. Plan your day to include exercise like a long walk or yoga class before. Get to the spa in plenty of time to enjoy any facilities like steam or sauna. After your massage or facial, give yourself time to rest afterwards. Write in your journal, reconnect with your partner, maybe go for another stroll. Notice the world around you.

Even better for a spa staycation is a trip to a resort spa. You pay more for treatments, but you get a locker, a robe, and all-day access to the facilities -- gym, pools, and grounds. (Check ahead to find out if there are any restrictions.) Plan on having lunch. Think about what you can do there and plan out your day so you make the most of your time there.

One of the known risks of a staycation is that people don't give themselves enough time for fun and relaxation. They spend too much time doing chores around the house, and don't end up feeling rested and renewed. Scheduling "spa time" in your staycation can prevent that.

Funny, we did exactly this! The week after the fourth is typically a little slow, so we had a celebration ourselves and sent out an email blast to our guests letting them know about our Staycation Spa Specials. It has proven to be very successful and helped to book up our schedules. We picked some unique services that would create a special experience and treatments that would be something a client may not have tried before. We featured our Lomi Lomi massage, an Organic Body Bronzing Treatment, a Sukapao Beauty Foot Ritual and more. This has proven to be a very busy promotion and one we will repeat again next year.

I continue to love the Staycation. Particularly in this economy where we all are looking at cutting back on traveling.

And I’m glad to see that Denise had great success with their Staycation specials at Complexions Spa for Beauty & Wellness.
