When you're going on a spa trip, it's always a good idea to make your spa reservations in advance. You get a better chance at getting the times and spa treatments you want, and you may find out things that enrich your stay.
On Sunday I'm heading to Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club in Lenox, Massachusetts, a popular all-season spa getaway in the scenic and culturally rich Berkshires. The resort has 114 guest rooms set on 380 hilltop acres, a panoramic 18-hole Championship golf course, four restaurants, rooms for conferences and weddings, and a 35,000 square foot resort spa.
Cranwell draws people from Boston, New York City, Albany, Connecticut and New Jersey, and is especially known for its golf, affordability, and beautiful spa. I'm spending two nights there to get a couple of treatments, do laps in the fabulous 60-foot-long indoor swimming pool, and check out its schedule of fitness classes -- anywhere from four to six classes a day.
Day one: I arrive in the afternoon, then swim and spend some time in the fitness center before I get a facial. Cranwell just brought in Babor, a beautiful, results-oriented line of German skin care products, and I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do.
The important point here is that I've built in pool-time and exercise BEFORE the facial. You don't want to get your skin infused with all those beautiful products and then jump in a pool. After the facial, I'll probably have dinner in the 1894 mansion that is the heart of this property.
Day two: After breakfast, I'll write, exercise and then take the moderate yoga class at noon. I'll have lunch in the Spa Cafe (a nice option I found out about while making my spa reservations) and then "rest and digest" before my mid-afternoon treatment. Cranwell Grand Mosaik is a signature treatment that combines exfoliation, a body mask, time in a dry flotation system (more about that later) and a massage with Babor's A-C-E Body Cream, which I love. I'll be relaxing at what is usually a low energy time for me. When I'm done, I'll read a little and then get ready for a peaceful dinner, maybe in my room.
It really is important to imagine what you want and talk to someone about the possibilities when you're planning your spa appointments. On this segment of the trip I mostly want to exercise, get some excellent spa treatments, and have time to myself to reflect and write in my journal.
On Tuesday morning I wake up and am just a few minutes from Canyon Ranch, where I am specifically going to get some help with waking up my body and spirit six months after my brother's death. I've gained weight and lost my exercise routine, and I want to make moves in the proper direction. At the same time Canyon Ranch has psychological services that you don't find in most spas, so they are in a unique position to offer help, I believe. I'm going to find out more about what they suggest tomorrow.
It's always a good idea to stay in the Lenox area the night before a stay at Canyon Ranch because they let you arrive as early, stash your bags with the doorman, and get started with your programs. That way you make the most of your time there. Don't arrive a 4 p.m., like I did my first time.
I think Cranwell is the perfect choice for that overnight stay. But it's also a great golf and spa retreat for a romantic weekend, a golf buddy outing, or a girlfriend getaway. Call 413-637-1364 or 800-572-8938 for more information.
