My First Day At Canyon Ranch

By February 5, 2013

The experienced Canyon Ranch guest knows that you can arrive as early as you want to on the first day of your stay, so it's wise to stay overnight in Lenox. I woke up at Cranwell Resort & Spa, just five minutes away, had a quick breakfast, and tossed my bags in the car.  Five minutes later I was passing through the gates to this lovely property, built around around an 1890 Italianate mansion.

Usually you leave your bags with the doorman and check into your room at 3 pm, but my room was available so I got early access. The rooms have been nicely updated since the last time I was here, and everything looks familiar but fresh.

I've changed since then, too. The first time I came, I was nearly berserk with excitement, trying to do everything. Today, I took it easy. I wasn't running down hallways.   One of my favorite moments was having a cappuccino by myself in the cafe, looking at the beautiful view, thinking about how to living a deeply authentic life.

There are still all the things I first loved about Canyon Ranch -- an amazing amount of variety and choice all through the day. I went to lectures on The Science of Weight Loss, Great Sex At Any Age (standing room only!), and Practicing The Power of Gratitude.

I took both lunch and dinner in the Demonstration Kitchen, where chefs teach you how to make healthy, delicious, nourishing food, and give you some of their favorite shortcuts and tips.  That's the kind of inspiration I'm looking for. I took a lovely Chi Energy class, and look forward to more.

I came here to help myself on the path of healing from my brother's death last summer, and I realized  I'm already well on my way.  Just from being able to plan and make this trip, to imagine being around people I don't know, to make conversation with strangers and enjoy their company, appreciating where I am today -- all this is huge progress from just three months ago.

Maybe my short-term memory is still a little weak (good thing I'm a great note taker).  Maybe I don't have the drive to do cardio, strength training and stretching all in one day.  But I'm moving again.  I'm drawing deep into myself, and I feel my strength gathering.  And I'm grateful Canyon Ranch is helping me along with their depth of healing resources.
