Spa Recipes For Breakfast

One of the great traditions of Mother's Day is serving mom breakfast in bed, and the big day is coming up May 13. The Destination Spa Group asked chefs from destination spas for some healthy recipes that kids can make for mom. They do look delicious, and healthy, but I think most are beyond the abilities of child chefs. Maybe the muffins will work.

But here's another idea -- try some of these healthy breakfast recipes. And give Dad this pumpkin body scrub recipe I'm pretty sure the kids CAN make with ingredients you already have.

I get a lot of spa newsletters, but was particularly happy to see the most recent one from Green Mountain at Fox Run, a women-only weight-loss program in Ludlow, Vermont. New Age Health Spa Closes

New Age Health Spa, a long-time destination spa in Neversink, New York, will not re-open in May 2012 for the summer season. "The economy continues to be a challenge and sadly, we will not be able to do business this year," reads a message on its website.

My Week at Golden Door Spa

I just got home from my trip to Golden Door Spa in Escondido, California, and finally understand what makes it so special. This is the original destination spa, inspired by a Japanese inn and created by Deborah Szekely (pronounced Za-Kay) in 1958.

I'm inclined to agree with their claim that they are still the best, especially if you're looking for an intimate, nurturing, customized experience and have no medical issues you want to address. I've never felt so well cared for at any other spa. One morning I slept in, and when I awoke breakfast was waiting for me on the table, the curtain pulled halfway back onto a beautiful scene of stone Japanese lanterns and blooming azaleas. It was like a fairy had come to take care of me while I slept.

Don't Worry. You Can Still Take Spa Yoga Classes

Yoga classes are a staple offering at destination spas and the one class that many resort spas offer. So a frisson of fear went through the spa world, not to mention the larger yoga community, when an article called "How Yoga Wrecks Your Body" appeared in The New York Times Magazine. Excerpted from a book called The Science of Yoga by William J. Broad, a respected science writer for The New York Times, the article was filled with tales of injures, including strokes. One yoga teacher said the vast majority of people should give up yoga altogether because it was too likely to cause harm.

But people forget magazine articles pretty quickly, and the book itself is a significant contribution to the study of yoga, separately fact from fiction, clarifying yoga's history, and detailing how yoga can really help, how it can harm, and how to avoid injuries. I think its a must-read for anyone with a yoga practice, yoga teachers, and for managers working at spas who offer yoga. Read the full review
