QUESTIONS FOR THE SPA GUIDE

Answer to Question 11:

Hot stone massage is the "hot" treatment at spas right now. I am currently doing research for a Spa Site article on this type of massage to be run in May (hopefully). I don't have enough material gathered to give you a complete answer to your questions yet, but hope to in the coming weeks. This is what I know so far (from Chateau Elan in Georgia)-

Smooth basalt stones are heated in water then applied to the body with oils, so the technique doubles as a hot oil treatment. It is usually incorporated into Swedish Massage where the stones become an extension of the therapist's hands and the lingering heat is absorbed by tight or sore areas of the body. Tension is literally melted away. The weight and heat from the stones are the perfect combination for relaxation and stress reduction.

When I find out more, I will email you. In the mean time, you can post your question on the Spa Site Bulletin Board at:

http://spas.about.com/mpboards.htm

That way, other Spa Site visitors can share what they know about it.

Thanks for your question and your interest in the Spa Site.
