by Bernard I. Burt, Pamela J. Lectman
The readers of spas.about.com love "Best of Spas" lists. These collections of select spas are always extremely popular features on the site and get a tremendous amount of traffic. The readers are going to flip over 100 Best Spas of the World. Burt and Lechtman have assembled their choices for the top spas throughout the world. However, they do not rank them. The book is a directory organized by location. The authors include many of the pillars of the US spa community such as Canyon Ranch, Miraval, Cal-a-Vie, and The Golden Door, as well as well-known names in Canada, Mexico, Europe, India, Africa, Middle East, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and even Cruise Ships. The only surprise was the inclusion of the Grove Park Inn Resort in North Carolina which was scheduled to open almost two months after the book's release. No doubt the authors got a sneak peek at what's to come and what's to come must be extraordinary. Burt and Lechtman selected spas they considered to be "the best of their type, be it a destination spa or resort spa, day spa, or mineral springs spa. What distinguishes them might be the program, the location, the design, or that indefinable look of happiness on people's faces as they leave." They used the following criteria:
They dedicate two-three pages for each spa on which they discuss what makes it outstanding and provide a large sidebar that includes essential information such as:
Best of all, it has what all spa directories to date have lacked: Pictures. In Color. Lots of them. 100 Best Spas of the World is a book I am happy to add to my spa library and look forward to browsing through it often.
