Castillo at Xunantunich, A Mayan Ruin Near The Lodge at Chaa Creek Adventure Centre, Rainforest Reserve and Spa near San Ignacia, Belize, Central America
Julie Register, Your Guide to Spas, visited this resort in Belize in December 2002

The Castillo at the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich was the ancestral shrine of the ruling family of Xunantunich. Excavations revealed a long development history of the building. The earliest construction dates to about 600AD. Later constructions gradually created a large central pyramid flanked by structures to the east, west and south. By the end of the Maya occupation at Xunantunich, the Castillo had become the southern edge of the city.
