Spa Music

wpe1.gif (10817 bytes)One of the first things opportunities spas have to help their clients prepare for and fully accept the treatments they receive is to provide music that is conducive to relaxation and peace. When I visit a spa, I often don't notice the music while it is playing, but I do notice the effects. Generally, I start to breath slower and deeper, my muscles begin to go limp, and my mind shuts off the busy thoughts. I  also definitely notice when music is absent or inappropriate. Spas that I visit usually play new age or classical music. My current favorites are Songs From A Secret Gardenwpe7.gif (873 bytes) by Secret Garden, Reflections on Life..Thoughts in Solitudewpe7.gif (873 bytes) by Rachel Kamps, LMT,  Heal Of The Handwpe7.gif (873 bytes) by Robin Spielberg, and Music for the Mozart Effect Volume1 - Stengthen the Mind. I am now finding uses for this music outside of spas. Obviously, it's great for relaxing to at home. But lately, I have been listening to it at work, too. One of my coworkers commented that it would put her to sleep. However, I find it makes me less tense and able to concentrate better and for longer periods of time.

I asked a few spas and massage therapists what their favorite music was and what comments they got, if any, about it from their clients. Some of the responses follow. I have linked the titles to Borders.com or other sites on the web that offer the CDs. If the site provides an audio sample of the music, the title is followed by wpe7.gif (873 bytes). For Borders.com selections, scroll down to find the highlighted samples. After the responses is a comprehensive list of "spa music" also with links to Borders.com or other web sites.

Music Suggested by Spas and Massage Therapists

Massage Therapist S.B. noted, "My all-time favorite music to massage to is "Wind and Mountain" wpe7.gif (873 bytes) by Deuter. It's kind of a new-age and Asian combination--rhythmic, interesting, and relaxing."

wpe9.gif (11076 bytes)Massage Therapist M. said, "I love Enya's greatest hits, it puts me in a trance like state that seems to be very condusive to giving massages...Everyone who listens to it compliments on it, so it is a favorite of mine..".

From Massage Therapist M-L B, "Ray Lynch has two of my favorites: Nothing Above my Shoulders but the Evening  wpe7.gif (873 bytes) and Deep Breakfast wpe7.gif (873 bytes). Both are new age type all instrumentals. Also anything by Keiko Matsui wpe7.gif (873 bytes). Clients have liked both artists."

From Michele Moreo, owner of Zen's Inn Bodywork Sanctuary in Santa Fe, NM,  "Regarding Spa Music...we take a unique approach. We stay away from anything new age and synthesized. We prefer world music which ties in nicely with our decor and relaxed atmosphere. You may find this selection very different from other spas, but it works for us and our clients like it.
