A  PALACE  OF  PEACE
A holistic spa where you can relearn the forgotten art of resting…
Rio Caliente, Mexico

By Christi Thompson

Imagine a place where everything you do in a day is beneficial to improving your physical and mental well being.  In our hectic, fast paced, high stress lives, Rio Caliente offers an affordable modern style, that has its roots set in an ancient healing place of the Huichal Indians.

My first inclination after arriving at the spa, and being greeted and oriented by the staff, was to start making a list of all the things I wanted to do at Rio Caliente; yoga, sunset walks, massage, facials, horseback riding, pool exercises, healing therapies, the infamous one hour scalp and neck treatment. It didn’t take long for me to realize my cell phone didn’t work in this convex of an ancient dormant volcano, and that I had subconsciously  left my day-planner at home. I had to laugh at myself as I looked around the dining room clearly recognizing the people who had recently arrived, from the ones who were showing the peaceful glow of Rio Caliente.

Everything you do here is planned to fill you with healthy energy and body restoration. It begins with the water.  Natural filtered volcanic water loaded with minerals and naturally occurring lithium. It benefits your body and organs by drinking it, relaxes and revitalizes muscles when doing pool exercises in it, and settles the mind while soaking in it under the stars with the hot steam wrapping around you like a blanket in the cool night air. Feel your muscles relaxing as the natural lithium begins its effects and its guaranteed to lower blood pressure. Walk a few feet away from the hot springs and you can finish your new bedtime ritual in the steam room filled with eucalyptus leaves. Walk back to your private cabana where the fire will be lit, wrap yourself into the thick Mexican hand crafted bed quilt and have the best sleep you will have had in ages.

The sun rises late in Rio Caliente, the air is still cool and fresh from the night before but it doesn’t take long until you are basking under the hot sun in your bathing suit.  The meals are a  mouth watering treat.  Buffet styled foods, that are slimming, low fat, salt free, with fresh vitamin and enzyme filled dishes. They feature fresh juices of many of the local fruits like agave, or my personal favorite oatmeal juice. Imagine sitting down and eating as much as you want, guilt-free, completely satisfied and knowing you have fueled your body with the correct balance of proteins, carbs, fruits and vegetables, calories, fats, without any calorie counting, weighing, food preparation, and so on. Some people report losing as much as half a pound a day.

The spa treatments are very special here. They have a broad range of services such as the ground breaking treatments of Bio-Resonance Therapy, used successfully in treating health ailments from cancer to allergies. 75% of cancer patients treated in Europe with Bio Resonance Therapy have recovered successfully. There are onsite MD’s that specialize in holistic natural remedies and will consult you on the beneficial treatments you may receive while there. The therapists are trained experts in their fields from massage to a variety of beauty treatments. There is a full spectrum of  massages offered such as Swedish, lymphatic, cellulite, deep tissue, full body, head scalp and neck, reflexology, hand massage.  You may have a manicure/pedicure in the sun by the pool  or  lay privately wrapped in local volcanic mud.

There are many ways to keep your days filled at Rio Caliente.  You can rest by the pool with a book, day trips to local towns and cities such as Guadalajara, Tequila, or the infamous Lake Chapala, participate in yoga, tai chi or  pool classes, wander  the sides of the Rio Caliente River by horseback, or join in the hikes.

There is a sunset hike that will stay with you forever and really sums up the experience of Rio Caliente. It begins after dinner, a short hike on a belly of good food, and relaxed revitalized muscles. The sky begins to drop and your sun kissed skin begins to cool to the night air, you reach the outlook spot and see the spa spread out below.  Horses whinny off in the distance, crickets cackle around you as the sky illuminates the beautiful pinks, oranges and blues native to Mexican culture.  Beautiful pastures and tree lines fall behind the moon and you feel again what its like to be rested, healed, relaxed and nurtured. Endless lists and cell phones feel silly as you look out to nature with a revitalized body and mind.
