Millbrook Resort
Arrowtown,
New Zealand
by Julie Register
After extreme New Zealand sports, try extreme New
Zealand relaxation. Millbrook Resort is located in an area of New
Zealand that is a hubbub of activity. Nearby Queenstown offers bungy
jumping, river surfing, the shotover jet, skydiving, rafting, and skiing
in the winter. It is in the heart of the Central Otago wine growing
region. Its a short plane ride to Fjordland, Milford Sound, and the
Hollyford Track. If thats not enough, its only a few hours from
Fox Glacier or Mt. Cook where you can hike to your heart's contnet. When youre
all worn out from the extreme sports, the Spa at Millbrook is an ideal
place to recover.
The Spa offers separate mens and womens
saunas, two outdoor co-ed whirlpools, a hot pool, and a heated
salt-water indoor pool to
soothe sore muscles. There are a number of treatments suited for someone
trying to fit a months worth of experiences into a day or two. A
therapeutic massage can relieve the effects of a fatigued body from head
to toe. A deep tissue massage can stimulate the bodys meridians,
relieving and expelling tension from the calves, thighs, lower back and
shoulders. An aromatherapy massage can stimulate the lymphatic system to
eliminate toxins built up in the body. The Body Resting and Relaxing
Wrap is ideal after strenuous exercise a combination of aromatherapy
oils in conjunction with a detoxifying massage draws the toxins and
aches from tired, tense muscles. The Tired Legs massage is a lymphatic
massage used in conjunction with concentrated leg wrap of aromatherapy
oils to eliminate water retention in the feet and legs (also great after
a long flight!).
Of course, you don't have to leave the resort to
get your exercise. The Spa's gym offers fitness assessments, exercise
programs, classes, and personal training. There is golf and tennis. If
exercise isn't your thing, the spa also offers a large menu of pampering
and beauty services.
Former President Clinton stayed at this resort. John
Travolta did, too. He visited the spa for a facial and manicure and had
an en suite massage.
The Spa was in the process of getting bids for
expansion in during my visit in March, 2001. The goal is to build an
additional building across the stream to house the spa services by the
end of the year. The new menu will have more of a French influence.
Its worth mentioning that the value of the US
dollar was strong in New Zealand at the time of my visit in March, 2001 (~$.40NZ/$1US). That means
that Millbrooks three night spa packages that were priced $1,135NZ
(twin) at that time cost ~$454US! That includes a Village Inn room, continental
breakfast each morning, 3-course "Healthy Lifestyle" dinner
each night, use of the spa facility, and a variety of spa services
depending on which package you choose (details below). Of course, you will probably want to stay in New
Zealand longer than three nights. HOME AT FIRST
offers 14-day trips to New Zealand for less than $3,000 per person which
includes customized itinerary based on interest (spas, golf, wine,
etc.), airfare from LA, someone to meet you at the airport to review
itinerary and provide orientation, maps, guidebooks, car rental, quality
accommodations chosen for location, hospitality, character, and
amenities, and breakfast each morning. Millbrook Resort participates in
the HOME AT FIRST program.
