Hotel Escalante The Hotel Escalante in Naples, Florida reminds me of the saying, "The whole is more than the sum of its parts." Looked at separately, the facilities and services at Hotel Escalante are nice. But put them together, and you have a very appealing package - particularly well-suited for couples looking for a romantic getaway. It's small - only 71 rooms in the style of a Mediterranean villa. It's private - acres of lush gardens with 300 species of tropical plants, some quite rare, are arranged to make you feel as if you are in a world apart. Blooms appear year round and butterflies drift from flower to flower. It's unassuming, but elegant - and has the luxurious amenities you look for in a nice resort - mahogany plantation-style furniture, Frette linens, Waterworks bath fixtures, Molton Brown bath amenities, hairdryers, ceiling fans, two line phones with data port and voice mail, in- room safe, 27" color TV with movie channels, icemaker and minibar, iron and ironing board, and USA Today daily delivery. It's got a spa - small, but offering the essentials. The fitness room opens out to the swimming pool, Jacuzzi and tanning deck. It features ladies' and men's steam rooms with sauna, treadmills, free weights, and recumbent cycles. Spa services (see below for full list) include massage, facials, and body treatments and are offered in one of two treatment rooms, poolside, or en suite. I had a paraffin treatment for my hands and a chair massage outside in the lovely pool area. It couldn't have been nicer. It's personal - all members of the staff serve as concierge. Warm friendly service with a smile and guest compliance is the main ingredient in their credo. Among the services offered are restaurant and theater reservations, sightseeing advice and arrangements, babysitting services, health care nurses, airline ticketing, boat excursions, sport tickets, flowers, laundry/valet services, medical situations, private shopping, even weddings. It's well-situated - in the heart of exclusive Old Naples, two blocks from the magnificent Gulf of Mexico beaches. Designer stores and gift shops can be found in nearby Third Street South, Fifth Avenue South, Waterside shops and the Village on Venetian Bay. Other shopping includes Coastland Center Mall, Tin City and Prime Outlet Stores. It's convenient - The Hotel offers a small transportation service every hour to take guests to the beach or shopping on Fifth Avenue or Third Street. Fine and casual dining is available at the 14 Restaurants of Hotel Escalante - all within walking distance of the hotel. Through an exclusive arrangement with the Hotel, guests can enjoy preferred seating, and direct billing to their rooms. Guests enjoy preferred golfing privileges at several area championship courses. Tee times can bee arranged through the guest service staff. fresh towels. It's a good value - at least it was at the time I visited in May, 2001 (see packages below). Included in the rates are breakfast (served poolside, in the library or reception), gourmet snacks served throughout the day, tea and coffee service, complementary use of the swimming pool and Jacuzzi (including sunscreen and fresh water spray), garden walks led by horticulturist, and use of the fitness center.
