The NLFÍ Health and Rehabilitation Clinic was founded in 1955 by Jónas Kristjánsson, a medical doctor, who introduced new and revolutionary ideas about nutrition, health and health care.  The clinic combines the benefits of modern medical science with health care traditions of the Nature Health Association of Iceland. Two main groups of clients are treated: 1) those suffering from crippling ailments such as arthritis and requiring physical therapy and rehabilitation, and 2) people who suffer from obesity, stress and other modern afflictions and need to rediscover a healthy lifestyle. Guests are encouraged to be responsible for their own health through physical exercise, proper nutrition and above all, positive thinking. The 160 patients are cared for by a staff of three doctors, 10 registered nurses, six licensed practical nurses, five physical therapists, six massage therapists, two sports therapists, a nutritionist, psychologist and specially trained assistants.

Treatments can be customized for individuals or clients can participate in group treatments for:

  • Overweight and dietary problems
  • Rheumatism and arthritis
  • Neck and back injuries
  • Heart problems
  • Recovery from cancer and other illnesses
  • Giving up smoking (6 day program)
  • Stress management
The price at the time of my visit (May, 2003) was USD  200/day for a Single room and USD 170/day, per person for a Double room (please check with the clinic for current prices). Included in the price:
  • Accommodation (The clinic, which gets around 2,500 visitors a year, operates 160 beds in plain but comfortable single or double rooms)
  • Meals (Health food is served at the clinic and consists mainly of vegetables, fruits, cereals and dairy products.  Fish is served twice a week.  The hot drink always available is Icelandic herbal tea as well as other brands of tea. The clinic was  one of the first places in Iceland offering  organically grown vegetables. About 40% of the vegetables offered at the clinic are grown in its own greenhouses and gardens.)
  • Water gymnastics (in naturally heated swimming pools)
  • Daily walks
  • Consultation with a doctor
  • Physiotherapy
  • Individual counseling with a nutritionist if requested
  • Massage (therapeutic and lymphatic drainage - two or three times a week depending on  individual needs).
  • Mud baths (made from Icelandic volcanic ash and mud) and/or herbal baths and acupuncture are also available

If residents do not have these as part of their normal program, they can buy massage,  mud baths and herbal baths  in the Outpatient Clinic for an additional charge.

The NLFÍ Health and Rehabilitation Clinic is located in the hot springs town of Hveragerdi, only a 30 minute drive east of Reykjavik.
