The first stop on our scooter ride was Gibb's Hill Lighthouse which is very close to the Sonesta resort. This is the oldest cast-iron lighthouse in the world. It's lantern was lit for the first time in 1846. Like a giant grandfather clock, the revolving light was kept in motion by a 1,200 lb. weight suspended on a thick chain which went down the center column. It had to be wound every five hours. The brilliant belt of light beamed by the revolving structure of tiny lenses across the horizon was produced by a single powerful lamp which burned 18 pints of whale oil each night. At 362 feet above sea level, the beam could be seen by ships 26 miles away.

Climbing to the top provides great exercise...

And a great view of the entire island.
