Royal Sonesta Hotel Boston (Cambridge)
by Julie Register, Your Guide to Spas

On my first visit to Boston since I was eight years old, I stayed at The Royal Sonesta Hotel Boston. I was there with my children to check out music schools - the New England Conservatory of Music's graduate program (classical piano) for my daughter and Berklee School of Music's undergraduate program (jazz guitar) for my son. Of course, I welcomed the opportunity to visit another spa.

The Royal Sonesta is actually in Cambridge - across from Boston right on the Charles River. The location was extremely convenient for our visit. The hotel offers a courtesy van to various parts of the city which allows sightseeing without having to worry about parking which made it even more convenient. Our room (759) provided marvelous views of the water, marina, walking/biking paths, the Museum of Science, and Boston. There was a big thunderstorm one of the nights we were there. We stretched out on the bed watched the lightening over the city. I had the wrong camera with me. It would have been perfect for a long exposure shot. Our visit was in August and the Royal Sonesta was running a Summer Fest with free ice cream, free use of bicycles, and a free boat tour. The Charles, which is only used for recreation, is right outside the Royal Sonesta's back door. Bike paths line both banks. We caught the boat tour at the CambridgeSide Galleria across the street from the hotel. What a great way to see the city! Friday night was Blues BBQ night on the patio overlooking the river featuring local music by Blues Food.

The Sonesta Health Club offers a 50-foot indoor pool with a retractable glass roof, garden sundeck, and whirlpool. Weekly water aerobics classes are provided. The separate men's and women's locker rooms have steam, sauna, showers and amenities such as hairdryers, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shaving cream, razors, hairspray, and antiperspirant. The fitness area has Nautilus and Cybex weight systems, free weights, stairmaster, treadmills, rowing machines, and exercise bikes. Personal trainers and fitness assessments are available. Use of the fitness facilities and indoor/outdoor pool at Sonesta Health Club are complimentary for hotel guests. The spa treatment area has one facial aesthetics room and one massage treatment room.
