Two Spas in Mexico
Hotel Spa Ixtapan and Rio Caliente

Dear Julie:

I thought you might like to know a little about two very interesting spas that Mel and I have been to in Mexico. They were both quite different but definitely worth visiting.

The one we have returned to several times is called Hotel Spa Ixtapan and is located 65 miles outside of Mexico City. It can be reached by car from other parts of Mexico {we drove there from Puerto Vallarta}, or by taking a plane into Mexico City and having the hotel pick you up there in their private van . When you arrive at the Spa you are amazed at the size and beauty of the Hotel and the 35 acres that surround it. There are magnificent gardens, a golf course, tennis and horse back riding facilities, as well as several beautiful fresh water and thermal pools, waterfalls, outdoor restaurant, etc. Indoors, the Spa facility
equals any that you'll find in the States , but with the added warmth of the people who take care of you, most of whom have been working there since the hotel opened....and are expert in the many services they offer, such as massages, facials, thermal wraps, cardiovascular and weight training instruction and also available are saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools, Swiss showers solarium and thermal baths, plus many more treatments and therapies. The Hotel has beautiful guest rooms or villas, each with wonderful views of the surrounding area and the choice of dining in the regular dining room or in their special menu restaurant for those on the Spa plan.  It's really a wonderful get-away and you feel truly pampered and healthy by the time you leave. We have returned their several times and we are planning to go again this year with a group of people who will be experiencing this wonderful Spa for the first time....How about joining us? Guarantee you'll add it to your list of favorites.

The other Spa we visited was Rio Caliente which is near Guadalajara. It's much more primitive than Ixtapan, located way up in a very isolated area, surrounded by forests, mountains and hot natural springs. It is not fancy at all and most people walk around in robes most of the day. They offer all the health services and especially hot mudbaths, yoga and strictly vegetarian meals. No entertainment at night, so you retreat to your room early, light the fire in your fireplace and go to bed early, so you can start the next day with a brisk walk or a horseback ride in the mountains at the crack of dawn.
