Vizcaya, the winter home of International Harvester VP James Deering, was completed in 1916 in the Italian Renaissance style. Its art and furnishings span 400 years of European history. Vizcaya was originally a 180-acre estate, designed to resemble a typical self-sufficient Italian villa with a dairy, poultry house, mule stable, greenhouse, and staff residences. The formal gardens were not completed until 1921 because of World War I. During construction, 1,000 workers were employed, representing nearly 10% of Miami's population. Today the gardens at can be rented for weddings and receptions. |
