The Bottom Line
The best reason to go to a destination spa is to get inspired, and The Lodge at Woodloch does the trick. It’s set on 75 wooded acres in the Poconos of Pennsylvania and you can kayak at dawn, learn how to draw, meditate with healing sounds, or kickbox ‘til you drop. With dishes like seared scallop in ginger coconut broth, the food is excellent and you can even indulge in wine or take brandy by the outdoor firepit. There are 58 lodge rooms for overnight guests, but day guests can also enjoy the lavish spa. It's convenient to NYC, Philadelphia, northern New Jersey and Westchester.

Guide Review - Review: The Lodge at Woodloch
Some places call themselves destination spas but don’t deliver the goods – great programming, healthy food and inspiration for a happier, healthier life. The Lodge at Woodloch is the real thing, setting the tone with giant crystal chakra bowls in the lobby that create a healing resonance when you play them.

I liked The Lodge at Woodloch for several reasons. I got a lot out of the guided meditation classes, including one called Healing Sounds, which uses sound to cultivate helpful qualities like patience and let go of emotions like anger. I also loved the drawing classes because I have no talent and I felt like it was something I could learn and enjoy. A jock friend enjoyed the big gym and personal trainer/ physical therapist.

The food is so good you probably won’t lose weight, and it feels like a fine dining experience, complete with live music. Owners John and Ginny Lopis, who live across the street, are a warm presence at dinner.

Large, comfortable rooms overlook the forest, where you might see deer or wild turkey. I found the public areas oversized, but it’s meant to appeal to men as well as women.

The spa itself has great facilities like the outdoor infinity whirlpool where you can gaze at the trees. The spa was clean and beautiful and the therapists accomplished. I loved my invigorating Thai Bodywork and ultra-soothing Craniosacral Massage.

I was impressed by the warmth of the staff. And it’s the only place where doormen will explain the chakras as you check in.
