An Authentic Hammam Treatment

A hammam is not just a fancy word for a steam room, but a cleansing ritual that is part of traditional community life in Turkey and Morocco. This therapist has swung a soapy bag around until the bubbles form, and then squeezes them over your body.

During the hammam your body is heated to the point where you're sweating out toxins as the therapist exfoliates and washes you, all the time pouring water over you to keep you comfortable.
First, you're exfoliated with a Kessa mitt, made of organic cotton and bamboo, then you're washed with the bubbly, soapy water, and finally there is an alternating of hot and cold water to stimulate your circulation and lymphatic system.
The idea is not to overheat, so if you feel too warm, speak up and the therapist can pour cool water on the stone.
