Spa-hopping on Vancouver Island: Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa

Name: Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa, Courtenay, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

Type of Spa: Resort Spa

This resort spa feels like a summer camp. There’s no pretense here. Couples from Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest enjoy weekend getaways here while women make healthy pilgrimages in both small and large groups.

The Setting for Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa: Situated on six acres in Vancouver Island’s lush Comox Valley in the community of Courtenay, this ocean front resort and spa has views of Gartley Bay, Denman and Hornby islands and the snow-capped Coast mountains beyond.

Accommodations at Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa:Following a major expansion, the two-story, 64-room hotel includes 36 new beachfront suites with beach rock fireplaces, driftwood-tone furniture, fir timbers and peeled cedar logs. All rooms have robes for use at the spa. Chef Ronald St. Pierre prepares fresh, creative West Coast cuisine in the ocean side dining room (or outdoors in warm weather). Take a hike in nearby Strathcona Park or enjoy a day on the slopes at nearby Mount Washington.

The Spa at Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa: The 14,000 sq. ft. spa features 22 treatment rooms, an outdoor pool, hot tub/sauna, fitness room (personal trainers available) and the Starfish Yoga Studio ($10 per session). There’s also the Pacific Mist Hydropath ($50), a guided hour-long journey that re-creates the West Coast shoreline, complete with sculpted sandstone caves and pools. An aromatic steam cave, mineral massage pool, glacial waterfall, river walk and personal tidal baths carved out of rock (slather on seaweed and mud before entering) all add up to a Disney-esque high.

Signature Treatments at Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa: In addition to the Pacific Mist Hydropath, the massage menu is impressive: Sea and Scented Stone Massages ($115 CDN), Aromatherapy Massage on the Beach (in a cedar hut) is $100, Expectant Mother Massage ($100 CDN) and a Marine Mud Massage ($90 CDN) to name a few. Spa packages include the Sea to Sky ($135 CDN), an hour in the Pacific Mist Hydropath followed by a one-hour massage. A Couples Massage Class ($90 CDN) shows how to take the spa home with you.

What’s Special at Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa:. The seaside setting and surrounding rural areas along with the affordable rates and unique offerings.

Bottom Line: If you don’t like hoity-toity, this place is for you. There is nothing pretentious here and it’s popular with islanders and people from mainland British Colulmbia. If you want total privacy and exclusivity, this spa isn’t for you, as the pool and public areas can get busy at times.
