Golden Door

Location:

Golden Door Spa in Escondido, California, is the original luxury destination spa, created by Deborah Szekely (pronounced Za-Kay) in 1958. And I agree with their claim that they are still the best, especially if you're looking for an intimate, nurturing, customized experience and have no medical issues you want to address. I've never felt so well cared for at any other spa.
One morning I slept in, and when I awoke breakfast was waiting for me on the table, the curtain pulled halfway back onto a beautiful scene of stone Japanese lanterns and blooming azaleas. It was like a fairy had come to take care of me while I slept.

This level of service is possible because there are so few people -- a maximum of forty people each week, everyone in their own room.

Golden Door At A Glance:

Beginning each Sunday, its seven-day program offers you the rare opportunity to leave behind the distractions of everyday life. The Japanese-inspired inn even supplies a complete spa wardrobe for your stay.

Awake early to set out on a winding hike up to a breathtaking vista to witness the sunrise. Most of the year it's an intimate women-only atmosphere, but there are four men's weeks and four co-ed weeks. Many guests say it's not just luxurious, but a life-changing experience.

Guest Rooms and Rates at Golden Door:

Forty rooms with private patios are surrounded by meticulously landscaped courtyards of camellia bushes, koi ponds or sand gardens and antique Japanese art. The rate of $7,750 per person per week includes a personalized program of fitness, spa treatments (including daily massage in your room), and organic spa cuisine.

The Spa at Golden Door:

You'll meet with your personal esthetician to discuss a specialized beauty regimen, which includes daily massage in your room. The Bathhouse Spa has a sauna, steam room and Japanese hot tub and 8 treatment rooms. Treatments include a warm honey wrap and orange blossom milk soak, a peahc paraffin body mask and Ki-Atsu water therapy, similar to watsu.
