From the article: What Are Adventure Spas?
Adventure spas take you outside your comfort zone with opportunities for all-day hikes, rock-climbing, mountain biking and challenges that are sometimes more psychological than physical. But you can have an adventure at almost any spa. What was your best spa adventure? Share Your Story
My First Spa Experience
- Never having been to a spa before, I found myself in Baden Baden, Germany, entering the Irish/Roman spa. I followed a native in determined to do as the "Romans" do! Gulped at the idea of wearing only my birthday suit, I steamed, aromaed, saunaed, endured a loofah administered by a sergeant major scrubber, jumped in the icy pool, and finally napped in lamb skin in a darkened room. Fortunately I could go back the next day for the most rewarding experience of a lifetime. My life today finds me traveling far and wide testing the spa experience! Every one is different; every one is rewarding. Universally having a cadre of people devoted to pampering and cosseting me bring great joy to my world, and I literally seek out a new spa experience every chance that I have. Whether it be hot oil massage, lavender aroma therapy or climbing walls, the spa adventure never gets old; it just continues to get better.

Discovering A Place Devoted To Wellness
- My best spa adventure was my first trip to a destination spa -- Canyon Ranch in Lenox. I was writing about travel for Westchester Magazine and got an assignment to visit six spas within two hours of Westchester. Talk about a dream come true!! But Canyon Ranch literally blew my mind because there were so many experts there, talking about how to take care of my health and well-being on so many levels, so many classes, so many interesting things to do -- all at the same time! I was literally running from morning to night because I was so excited by all the possibilities. I learned a lot about myself -- that it was hard to go without a glass of wine with dinner, for instance. I had always been interested in health and well-being, getting massages, facials, doing movement classes, yoga, etc. But I never knew there was a place I could do all that and learn so much and have so much fun at the same time. And I've been in love with destination spas, in particular, ever since.
